Résumé

The author (b. 1947), son of Wolfgang Wagner, traces his life story, especially the conflict between himself and his father. This conflict was exacerbated by the author's discovery and public rejection of his family's Nazi heritage. He devoted himself to the study of Jewish composers, especially Kurt Weill and Viktor Ullmann, and has lectured throughout the world, including in Germany and Israel, on the direct line connecting Richard Wagner with the Nazis. Describes his friendship with Jews, especially refugees from Nazi Germany and Holocaust survivors, his organization of an international dialogue group, and his participation in meetings between children of survivors and perpetrators; one of these, very traumatic for him, took place in 1995 in Auschwitz. Pp. 91-102, "Der Antisemitismus der Familie Wagner (1850-1945)", discuss the antisemitism in Richard Wagner's writings, Houston Stewart Chamberlain as an ideological forerunner of Nazism, and Siegfried and Winifred Wagner's friendship and adoration for Hitler.
